DIALOGUES

The Sailor

Character profile:

The sailor appears to be a man in his late 30s, early 40s. Seasoned seaman, he has sailed through every inch of water in Britannia. Like any good sailor, the bottle is his best friend. He loves a good tale, and when whisky is flowing, he will make the entire audience roar with laughter with his crazy stories. But while known to be one to invent a good tale at the flip of a coin, his reputation as a reliable and honest man would never be questioned. Especially considering that such qualities are so rare in the world of ruffians he evolves in. Astute merchant and trader, he's also an excellent diplomat, having sweet talked his way out of many potentially dangerous sea confrontations. His motto: follow the wind where it will take you, but if the clouds are dark and the breeze smells of danger or death, take your sails down and let your rudder nudge the wind. He will not flee from a battle, but will avoid one whenever possible.

Dialogue

I was sailen me ship off the shores 'a Occlo, havin jest completed me most profitable job in ages. Twas no wind that night and me ship was a'floaten listless in the water. The seas 'ad been restless o' late, an I was jes standin on me deck, starin at the sea and thinkin o' some fun to be had when we 'it port. E'en me men was nervous, Sumthin in the air. We 'ad stumbled o'er some fisherfolk a way back an they seem ta' feel it to. All was rushin to land as fast as they was able. Pirates 'ad been more active 'an usual, roamin further'in twas their custom. Tales aplenty were bein tossed about o' stolen ships and sunken galleys. Strange days indeed.

Night 'ad fallen and not a breeze 'ad strirred our sails, when me look-out calls down that a' ship is approachin! Me crew scrambled on deck s'fast ya'd of thought our own boat was a-sinkin. I took out me lookin glass and tried 'ta get a better look an figure out 'ow this ship was movin s'fast on dead calm waters. I could nay see any oars, an no flag flew at 'er mast. But 'er sails! They was strained near to burst like they was bein blown by a great wind! Me cowardly crew started mumblin an snickerin 'bout ghost ships and sorcery, an I feared panic may take em, but a swift crack o' me lash set em back to order. Twas then I saw 'im. Young-un barely off 'es mother milk, lookin over 'es shoulder as is 'e feared the 'ounds o' 'ell themselves was on 'is tail.

The closer 'e got, the more we could feel whatever sorcery 'e was usin to move that ship 'o 'is. Wind was roarin 'round 'es vessel makin it fly o'er the water! As 'e got close the wind let down and 'e approached as if'n 'e planned on boardin, but stopped 'es craft dead in the water less'n an inch from me own. 'e says then "Let me speak to the Cap'n" and I say, "Im the cap'n o' this 'ere Vessel, what be yer business w' me?" Well, 'e started on this crazy tale o' a dead women needin 'is 'help, and seemed mighty impatient when I tried t' tell em when someone pass's on ya cant do much ta 'elp em anymore. 'E gave me a look like I was the fool! An 'im blabberin on 'bout 'elpin dead poeple? Well, then 'e goes on ravin 'bout 'avin ta find some Alchemist, and bein pursued by men who mean 'im 'arm. 'E said 'e 'ad taken the wrong map from em, then 'e shoves the cursed thing into me 'ands! He told me to 'ide it in as safe a place as I could and soon enough 'im or Lady Sakkarah would send fer it. I started to ask what the Lady 'ad to do with this 'hole affair but 'e said 'e didnt 'ave the time t'explain. The 'e turns around and says 'es t'be goin afore they catch up to 'im. But now as 'e didnt 'ave the map no more, atleast 'ed stand a chance o' survivin should they manage to catch 'im.

'e told me id 'ear from 'im in a fortnight, and if 'e 'adnt contacted me by then, I should inform the Lady. Tell 'er where I 'ad 'idden the map and ta send 'er champions to the Etheral Fortress t'get the location o' this Alchemist. Or atleast thats what it soundin like 'e was saying. 'E was talkin s'fast. Might o' said a map, or a book, 'an 'e said sumthin about a sea chart leadin ya to the Alchemist.

Unfortunatly, I 'id that map too well. There's a cave, West o' Sacrifice an no one e'er goes there, so I thought twould be a safe place. I placed the map all the way in the back, w' the entrance guarded by Ratmen an there rodent Wizards, But somethin else twas in the darkness o' that cave. I knew nothing o' these creatures when I 'id the map. I went to retrieve it but was turned back! Im a sailor ya see, not a warrior. I'm sorry I added to yer burden w' this, but from what i understood o that strange man's tale, you'll be needin that map a'fore ya can set out to find the Alchemist.
